Hassan: Dalits of Keregodu village in Arkalgud taluk staged a protest here on Wednesday alleging that they had been ostracised by caste Hindus of the village after Deepavali.
The protesters said the caste Hindus boycotted them after they refused to beat drums during the celebrations and later remove the corpse of cattle. Since then they have been barred from all social and cultural activities. Besides, the caste Hindus also imposed a fine of Rs. 501 on those who dare to speak to them.
During Ugadi celebrations, they were not allowed to enter inside the Basaveshwara temple. Also, the fair price shopkeeper denied ration for them. The Jati Dourjanya Virodhi Samiti, which led the protest, alleged that the Arakalgudu police also refused to register a complaint.
They submitted a memorandum to Additional Deputy Commissioner P. Subramanyam.

Rename Mysore University after Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar

While the controversy over conferring the honorary doctorate by the University of Mysore (Uom) on late king, Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar is still on, BSP State Secretary N Mahesh wanted the State government to re-christen the UoM after the illustrious ruler.

These were among the various opinions aired at the seminar ‘Should UoM award honorary doctorate to Rajarshi Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar?’ organised by the Mysore Kannada Vedike at Nataraja College here on Wednesday. Mahesh said that it is an insult to include Nalwadi in the same league as a sportstar who goes on sale during IPC auctions. Former Vice Chancellor, Kuvempu University Dr P Venkataramaiah opined that there was no other award equivalent to the ‘Rajarshi’ title given none other than the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. He said that it would be insult tot he great king if the university bestows honorary degree on him. Instead, he wanted,  the university should urge the government to confer the Bharat Ratna on the late king, he added. Dr Venkataramaiah bemoaned that there was no rule which mandates universities to grant honorary doctorates. But now all universities are competing with each other to award honorary doctorates, he noted. The decision of the university has become a major embarrassment for the Governor. Now the Governor is in a catch-22 situation, wherein he can neither deny or accept the UoM’s recommendation.  He said that for the outstanding work of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, even the Bharat Ratna would be less. He said that the if the varsity wants to give to the doctorate then it should not be along with others. The syndicate decision should be revoked, he added. While Manasagangothri is celebrating its golden jubilee, a statue of the former king should be installed and people should be informed about his achievements, he said. Journalist Krishna Vattam said that there was no necessity for UoM to award the doctorate to the former ruler. But, the decision can not be termed as wrong. If the university feels that is doing the wrong thing then they should urge for the Bharat Ratna. However, Nalwadi would always remain as the Rajarshi in the hearts of the people, he opined. Lecturer Prof K C Basavaraj, however, supported the UoM’s decision. He said that contribution of Nalwadi was immense. But for the younger generation to understand his contributions , it is necessary to award the honorary doctorate. Historian Prof P V Nanjaraje Urs, former mayor Narasimha Iyengar, Hosamutt Seer Sri Chidananda were present.

ಚಿಕ್ಕಮಗಳೂರು:ಬಹುಜನ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಸಂಘದ 4ನೇ ವಾರ್ಷಿಕ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನದ ಅಂಗವಾಗಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಬುಧವಾರ ನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೆರವಣಿಗೆ ನಡೆಸಿದರು.ಹಳೆಯ ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕು ಕಚೇರಿ ಆವರಣದಿಂದ ಮೆರವಣಿಗೆ ಹೊರಟ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಎಂ.ಜಿ. ರಸ್ತೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಬೋಳರಾಮೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಆವರಣ ತಲುಪಿದರು.ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ ಸಂವಿಧಾನ ದಿನಾಚರಣೆ ಅಂಗವಾಗಿ ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನವನ್ನು ಚಾಮರಾಜನಗರದ ನಾಗಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ ಹೊಲೆಯಾರ್ ಉದ್ಘಾಟಿಸಿದರು. 

ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಅಸ್ಪೃಶ್ಯರು ನಡೆದಾಡುವಾಗ ದಾರಿ ಗುಡಿಸುವ ಸಲುವಾಗಿ ಅವರ ಬೆನ್ನಿಗೆ ಪೊರಕೆ ಕಟ್ಟಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆಗ ಅದು ಅವಮಾನವೆಂದು ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.ಈಗ ಅಮೆರಿಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತೀಯ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳ ಕಾಲಿಗೆ ರೇಡಿಯೋ ಕಾಲರ್ ಕಟ್ಟಿದಾಗ ಅಂದು ದಲಿತರು ಅನುಭವಿಸಿದ ನೋವು ಇಂದು ಕೆಲವರಿಗಾದರೂ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಅವರು ನುಡಿದರು.
